KINO ASYL is a festival featuring films from the homelands of young people who have fled their countries and now live in Munich. The festival is curated by individuals with refugee experience and supported by professionals from the fields of culture and media.
From November 24 to 29, 2024, KINO ASYL celebrated its 10th anniversary – a decade full of stories by young people with refugee backgrounds. The grand opening took place on November 24 at the Münchner Kammerspiele.
The KINO ASYL film festival offers insights into diverse film cultures and personal stories. At its core are the perspectives of our curators, whose unique experiences and life paths shape the program. Their viewpoints make KINO ASYL a space where stories are shared that are rarely heard elsewhere – creating a platform for encounters, exchange, and new perspectives. It is open to everyone who shares our passion for film.

People with refugee experience can actively contribute as curators, bringing in their ideas and perspectives. There are also opportunities to volunteer or complete a mandatory internship as part of a university program. Whether you have prior experience or not – anyone interested in film, cultural exchange, and collaborative project work is warmly welcome!
In 2016, KINO ASYL received the Dieter Baacke Prize and a special award from the initiative “Culture Opens Worlds” for projects promoting cultural participation of refugees. In 2022, the festival was also awarded the Münchner Lichtblicke Sponsorship Prize in the category “Projects.”
The magazine “KINO ASYL – MAKING OF”, published in 2017, documents the creation of the festival during its first two years. It serves as a comprehensive record of the development process and aims not only to inspire similar initiatives but also to entertain, inform, and visually capture the “vibrations” of the festival.
