KINO ASYL is a festival featuring films from the homelands of young people who have fled their countries and now live in Munich. The festival is curated by individuals with refugee experiences and supported by professionals from the fields of culture and media.
For over ten years, KINO ASYL has been a well-established part of Munich’s cultural scene and has grown into a unique festival. For Munich’s film enthusiasts, it offers intense encounters with extraordinary film culture as well as with the curators themselves, who have personally experienced displacement. These curators not only present their carefully selected film programs but also share their perspectives and personal stories.
Thanks to our curators, a space is created where diversity is not just accepted but celebrated. Everyone who shares this belief and our passion for (short) films is warmly invited to become part of this special project.
KINO ASYL is a film festival that celebrates diversity and brings people together through shared cinematic experiences.
The personal perspectives of our curators offer deep insights into different life stories and unique film cultures.
As an open platform for dialogue, KINO ASYL invites you to discover new viewpoints and build bridges between different worlds of experience.
KINO ASYL is organized and hosted by the Media Center Munich of the JFF in cooperation with the
Refugio Art Workshop.
The project is carried out on behalf of the Department of Arts and Culture
of the City of Munich as well as Filmstadt München.
The festival is designed so that the curators are actively involved on every level. This is ensured through workshops and regular team meetings. Together, the festival team shapes the design, public relations, trailer, film program, and film presentations — including translating and subtitling when necessary. Even the supporting program, including exhibitions, music, and food, is created collaboratively.
Each curator presents to the audience a personally selected or self-produced film — often sharing their own story in the process.
This gives the audience insight not only into the film culture of the curator’s home country, but also into the lives of the people who live there.
After the screenings, there is an opportunity for Q&A sessions with the curators.
At the end of the year, we travel across Munich to various cultural venues to present a vibrant program of films. Our screening locations include the Münchner Kammerspiele, the NS Documentation Center Munich, the University of Television and Film (HFF), Kunstlabor2, Bellevue di Monaco, and the Gasteig HP8 of the Munich City Library.
