Olusuku Lwa Cement

For Kino Asyl i chose the song „Olusuku Lwa Cement“ by Ronald Alimpa. The music video showcases the breathtaking beauty of Uganda – its landscapes, its nature and the unique atmosphere of my homeland. I want to show the audience this side of Uganda, because internationally Uganda is often associated primarily with its political and societal challenges.
At the same time, I see a deeper contrast in the video: how can a country be so beautiful and yet be a place that forces or compels people to leave it? For me, that raises questions about political instability, human rights, a lack of prospects, and the experience of having to start a new life in another country – learning a new language, adapting to a new culture, and building a new home.
The encounter between an Ugandan man and a white woman in the music video also holds a special meaning for me. To me their connection is representative of the connection between different cultures and of the idea, that love, friendship and humanity knows no boundaries or skin colors. This meeting of different world is also what I particularly appreciate about kino asyl.
And finally, there is also a very personal reason why I chose this particular video. But I would like to save that story for the festival.
