This film from Sierra Leone deals with the problem of the early marriage of Aminata, the only daughter of poor parents. She is eager to go to school and get a Western education, but in her village only Islamic education is allowed for girls. At the age of 14, she is forced to marry the king of her country. She is raped and tortured, but continues to pursue her plan for a better future.

I come from Sierra Leone, West Africa. I’ve been in Germany since November 2014 and am part of the Kino Asyl team. Kino Asyl is a multicultural project through which I’ve learned a lot about different cultures from various countries. We chose the film Aminata because we wanted to show the challenges faced by a girl in Sierra Leone. I saw the film for the first time in January 2014 with friends on a small TV in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
I come from Sierra Leone, from the east, from the city of Koidu in the Kono district. I am also part of the team that selected the film “Aminata.” I produced a trailer to show how we watch films in Sierra Leone. I chose the film “Aminata” to depict the sad situation of young girls in Africa. The film is one of the most popular films in Sierra Leone. Kino Asyl helps me with integration into the German community. It helps me connect with other people from different African countries. I’m also happy to meet other asylum seekers, and it’s nice to share my own film with people living in Germany and have the opportunity to interact with each other. Being part of Kino Asyl helps me with this.

I am learning a lot from the processes involved in organising a film festival. I am participating in the KINOASYL project, because I want to show a film from my homeland that I watched some years ago with friends in Sierra Leone. This film is called “AMINATA” and it tells about the tradition of marrying young girls to older men in Africa.
