Baghdad Messi

Baghdad Messi

The film Bagdad Messi (2023) is a human drama about Hamoudi, a 10-yearold Iraqi boy who is passionate about soccer, particularly his idol Lionel Messi.
While playing with his friends in Baghdad, he is caught in an explosion and loses a leg.
Despite his disability, Hamoudi holds on to his dream of becoming a soccer player. His mother fears for his harsh reality, while his father supports and encourages him not to give up hope. The family moves to a safer village, but Hamoudi has trouble integrating with the children there, mainly because of his disability.
Why this film?
The film combines the reality of war and disability with dramatic fiction and conveys a strong message about inner strength and holding on to dreams despite difficult circumstances. It reflects a reality that affects millions of children throughout Africa, but is largely ignored internationally.

My name is Manar Alhayali, I come from Iraq and have been living in Germany for four years. Through the new experiences I have gained here, I am striving to build a successful and better future for myself. I am very interested in nature and art, and it is important to me to get to know new cultures and meet people from different backgrounds. In recent years, I have been involved in various projects because I enjoy being active in society. For me, volunteering means giving back to society some of the love and joy I receive. I am very happy to be part of Kino Asyl this year. I particularly like the fact that films from different countries are shown there, which open up new perspectives and encourage exchange. I think it's wonderful that Kino Asyl brings people together and allows them to discover things they have in common. I am convinced that Kino Asyl is not only culturally enriching, but also makes an important contribution to mutual understanding between people from all over the world.
