The film is about a boy named Şêro who lives in a Kurdish village on the border between Syria and Turkey. Şêro and his uncle enjoy playing pranks on the Turkish border police there. His sense of humor is one of his greatest strengths.
Şêro asks his uncle important questions about the neighborhood, about borders between countries, languages, and religions, and about how the people in this village live together. We see how he spends his daily life with his entire family. Through Şêro’s questions, we learn more about topics that go beyond his childlike perspective and extend across national borders.
Why this film in particular?
From the very first day I arrived in Germany, I noticed that many people here are interested in the world and keep up with the news—including news about the Kurdish regions.
Through this film, you can learn about a people’s conflict, the director’s story, and also my own personal story. For me, the film is a reflection on Daoud as a child and Daoud as an adult.
It’s important to me to show not only the war, the pain, and the sad stories, but also the culture and real life within a family.
It’s a story about courage, about the motivation to keep going, about resilience, and about the reason to keep living and fighting for hope.
The film is a way to bring Kurdish culture and the lives of the people here to Munich: their music, their school system, their upbringing, the colors of their flag, their food, their sense of humor, and their everyday lives.

My name is Daoud. I’m 30 years old and Kurdish. When I introduce myself this way, I’m usually asked a lot of questions: From which country? From which region? To try to answer those questions, this year I’m showing a film about a village located there. I’m very interested in films and stories, which is why I’m just starting my studies at film school. For me, Kino Asyl is a way to showcase my identity and my story in a special way through film.
