The film is about two siblings living with their mother in a poor neighborhood of Cairo. The 22-year-old Saqr wants to leave the dirty tannery district in Egypt where he lives and works. His sister Taheya, six years older, wants to prevent this at all costs. She sabotages the budding romance between her brother and a medical student and tries to thwart his plans to flee across the Mediterranean to Italy.
