Buddha Crumbled from Shame

Buddha Crumbled from Shame

In 2001, the Taliban blew up Buddha statues in Bamiyan, one of Afghanistan’s cultural centers. Amid the caves of the former monastery in the area, Bakhtay grows up—a girl torn between fighting local gangs of boys her age and her deep desire to find a place in a new girls’ school.

Mahdi

Kurator:in

My name is Mahdi Amiri. I was born in Afghanistan, in the Jaghori region. I want to show people what our true culture is. In my homeland, there are many different ethnic groups, each with its own unique culture. For example, I belong to the Hazara community, which is known for its beautiful traditional clothing and food. I always wanted to present something from my country that people in Germany would enjoy. I have so much to say about it. Kino Asyl is a chance for me to get closer to that goal. No pain, no gain — that’s what I’ve learned! I chose this film because it shows: What 40 years of war have done to Afghanistan How the war has affected children in particular What children wish for What children currently play in Afghanistan That’s what the film is about: A documentary — religious conflicts across Afghanistan Children’s access to education Discrimination and oppression of women Children’s leisure activities The Taliban’s negative influence on children Internal organization of the country
