Persepolis

Marjane is eight years old when the Shah is overthrown in Iran and the mullahs seize power. Progress and freedom are lost as thousands end up in prison during the Islamic Revolution, and women are forced to wear headscarves. But rebellious Marjane has no intention of submitting to the strict rules. Instead, she discovers punk, ABBA, and Iron Maiden, and has her first experiences with boys. She does not realize that her playful protest is dangerous—not only for herself but also for her family. In the comic film adaptation Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi shows how she experienced her childhood in Iran during and after the revolution, caught between modernity and Islamism. Persepolis tells a story that is both personal and universal. The everyday constraints in a repressive country are made understandable, as is the longing for a place in the community and the difficulty of staying true to oneself.

My name is Firas, I am 22 years old and this is my first year here in Germany. Since my youth, I have expressed myself through various art forms such as graffiti and photography. Later, that was no longer enough to tell my stories and express myself; I needed to tell the whole story with all its details. I love films and the way each film offers a unique experience and tells a story you had no idea about before. It is now one of my dreams to enter the film industry. Filmmaking, writing, directing, and even editing are things I enjoy doing, and I hope that through them I can tell stories about myself and my country, because it is full of stories waiting to be brought to light.
