“I left Uganda and moved to Denmark to start a new life. And then I left Denmark and my job there as well to start over once again, because my family couldn’t accept that I’m queer. I mean, that’s exactly what “The Night I Left America” is about: making the hardest decisions.”

I’m Kasim, 25 years old, and this is my first year with Kino Asyl. I have been living in Germany for seven months. I am a law graduate. In Uganda, I was a lawyer specializing in human rights and humanitarian law. I have been involved in film since 2016. In Uganda, I participated in various film productions. I joined Kino Asyl so that I can speak about stories from my homeland that are never told. I want to provide an audience for those people in Uganda who otherwise have no opportunity to share their views and thereby strengthen the voice of the silent majority.
